This page contains instructions on how to provide reference for sources using the University of Technology Sydney's (UTS) citation style. In the domains of Business, Communication, Design, Engineering, and Information Technology, this reference style—which is based on the Harvard Referencing System—is often employed.
According to UTS referencing, sources are arranged alphabetically by last name of the author in the reference list at the end of the paper and are mentioned in the text using the author-date approach.
Here are some examples of how to cite different types of sources in UTS style:
Journal article:

  • Author(s) Last name Initials. Year. Article title. Journal name. Volume(issue): Page numbers. DOI (if available).

Example:
Smith AB. 2019. The effects of exercise on mental health. Journal of Sports Medicine. 10(2):35-40. doi: 10.1007/s00127-019-0175-5
Book:

  • Author(s) Last name Initials. Year. Book title. Place of publication: Publisher.

Example:
Williams DE, Brown KL. 2017. Medical Microbiology. London: Mosby Elsevier.
Website:

  • Author(s) Last name Initials (if available). Year. Title of webpage. Name of website. URL. Accessed date.

Example:
World Health Organization. 2023. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. WHO. https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease/novel-coronavirus-2019. Accessed April 18, 2023.
In UTS style, in-text citations are indicated by the author's last name and year of publication, enclosed in parentheses.
Example: "Recent studies have shown that exercise can have a positive impact on mental health (Smith, 2019)."
The corresponding reference would be listed in the reference list at the end of the document as:
Smith AB. 2019. The effects of exercise on mental health. Journal of Sports Medicine. 10(2):35-40. doi: 10.1007/s00127-019-0175-5
